Both were found guilty of negligence charges.<\/p>\n<p>During the Arema FC &#8211; Persebaya Surabaya clash, there was tension in the stands, which spread over onto the field, and the police intervened with tear gas. Panic ensued and thousands tried to escape from the stadium, but some of them failed and died of suffocation in the chaos.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">The October 2022 derby match in Malang, East Java, between Arema FC and Persebaya Surabaya ended in chaos with 135 spectators killed, many crushed as they fled for exits after police fired tear gas into the crowd. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/jakpost?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">#jakpost<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/Kcsgio84oV\" target=\"_blank\">https:\/\/t.co\/Kcsgio84oV<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 The Jakarta Post (@jakpost) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/jakpost\/status\/1633782417826742272?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">March 9, 2023<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>One of the organizers, Abdul Haris, was sentenced to a year and a half in prison for negligence, although the prosecution requested a six-year sentence. Security guard Suko Sutrisno received one year in prison.
