ATP announced on Friday that it is planning to use Electronic line calls in place of the line judges to determine whether the ball is in or out from 2025 onwards.<\/p>\n
The chair umpires will remain referring the match, but the line judges will no longer be on the court.<\/p>\n
The decision come in wake of the sport’s determination to rely more on the enhancing technologies and reduce human errors.<\/p>\n
Line judges were used less ever since the coronavirus pandemic broke out in 2020, and most famously at the Australian and US Open, tournaments, which are not run by the ATP, therefore do not have to comply with their rules.<\/p>\n
Questions were raised, whether new technologies should be used on clay, since the ball leaves a mark, but the ATP have been clear, the new devices will be present no matter what the surface is.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is a landmark moment for our sport, and not one we\u2019ve reached without careful consideration. Tradition is core to tennis and line judges have played an important part in the game over the years,\u201d ATP CEO Andrea Gaudenzi said.<\/p>\n
\u201cThat said, we have a responsibility to embrace innovation and new technologies,\u201d Gaudenzi added. \u201cOur sport deserves the most accurate form of officiating.\u201d<\/p>\n
