Officials acknowledged a missed foul call in the final moments of the Los Angeles Clippers’ narrow 108-107 victory over Philadelphia on Wednesday night, dealing a potential blow to the 76ers’ quest for improved playoff seeding.<\/p>\n
Referee Kevin Scott admitted, in a pool report circulated to journalists by the NBA after the game, that the Clippers’ Paul George had indeed made contact with Kelly Oubre Jr. as he was driving with the ball just before the buzzer sounded.<\/p>\n
“In real-time, the crew interpreted the play as the defender jumping vertically,” Scott explained. “However, upon post-game video review, we observed some slight drift to the left by the defender George, indicating a foul should have been called.”<\/p>\n
Had the foul been correctly identified, Oubre would have had the opportunity to go to the free-throw line with just 0.2 seconds remaining, potentially altering the outcome of the game.<\/p>\n
Following the conclusion of the game, both Oubre and Sixers coach Nick Nurse expressed their dissatisfaction with the officiating. Nurse noted, “I thought there was certainly contact, certainly as much as the last two or three that got called and-1s at the other end.”<\/p>\n
Reflecting on his reaction to the controversial call, Nurse added, “In the heat of the moment in an intense basketball game, we’re not perfect. The refs are not perfect. I want to apologize for losing my cool.”<\/p>\n
