Mercedes Team Principal Toto Wolff has revealed that he told Lewis Hamilton he\u2019ll have to \u201cpicture our rear wing\u201d once he makes his Formula 1 switch to Ferrari in 2025.<\/p>\n
Wolff has admitted how leaks to the media meant the relevant parties had little choice but to make an immediate announcement regarding Hamilton\u2019s unexpected decision.<\/p>\n
\u201cI think it was difficult for him to really tell me because he left for the Christmas holiday and was Mercedes forever,\u201d Wolff told Fox News Australia at the Australian Grand Prix.<\/p>\n
\u201cNormally that\u2019s a time where we don\u2019t speak a lot because he\u2019s gone, because otherwise we\u2019re speaking every day. And then he came back and said, can we have a coffee? He came for the coffee, that\u2019s the normal thing we\u2019re doing when the season kicks off, and he said, \u2018I\u2019m leaving to Ferrari\u2019. And I said, \u2018really?\u2019<\/p>\n
\u201cAnd not that it shocked me, because we knew that we have a short-term contract, but the timing at the beginning of the season.<\/p>\n
\u201cI said, \u2018why at the beginning of the season?\u2019 He said he just wanted to have it out and not have it as a burden, emotional burden. \u201cAnd then you got to stay pragmatic after five minutes [of] shock and disbelief it was like, \u2018okay what are we doing announcement, what are we doing going forward into the season?\u2019<\/p>\n
\u201cAnd he said, \u2018well the announcement is a tricky thing because I think it\u2019s leaking\u2019, so it didn\u2019t give me lots of options.” Wolff said he still can\u2019t envisage Hamilton wearing Ferrari\u2019s red overalls and remarked that he told the seven-time champion he would end up behind Mercedes cars.<\/p>\n
\u201cI think first I can\u2019t imagine him in red,\u201d he added.
