The 69-year-old was involved in drunken driving incident

Bob Huggins has resigned as West Virginia head-coach a day after he was held by the police for drunken driving.

The university confirmed his resignation on Saturday night. A month earlier Huggins was suspended for 3 games for an anti-gay slur and denigrating Catholics in a radio interview.

The 69-year-old leaves as the third most successful coach in Division 1 with 935 career victories. His biggest accomplishments were taking Cincinnati to the Final Four in 1992 and West Virginia in 2010.

In a statement to the West Virginia community Huggins said: “Today, I have submitted a letter to President Gordon Gee and Vice President and Director of Athletics Wren Baker informing them of my resignation and intention to retire as head men’s basketball coach at West Virginia University effective immediately.”

No replacement has been named yet as the university delves into the matter.
