Two-time Formula 1 world champion Fernando Alonso believes Andretti is a good name who deserves a place on the grid, as he continues his fight to be the 11th team in the sport since 2025.
As is known earlier this week, Andretti’s team officially received approval from FIA to join Formula 1. Now, however, Michael Andretti faces the more difficult task, namely to come to an agreement with FOM and the other ten teams for the commercial conditions upon its entry.
It’s no secret that Andretti’s joining is not wanted by the existing teams, but Alonso is of the opposite side. The Spaniard has had a relationship with Andretti’s team in the past, as in his first appearance at the Indy 500, the McLaren team partnered with Andretti’s.
“A great team, I know Michael and he will be a great name to add to Formula 1. But there are other people who make these decisions – the FIA, the FOM and the teams as well. I don’t know exactly what decision they will make, but for me any decision will be good. I like Michael and his organization, but I understand the other stuff. I will support Aston Martin’s position, whatever it is, I will be okay with everything,” Alonso told the media in Qatar.
“In Formula 1, there are not many battles between the teams. Even if we are 50 people, we will actually fight with two or three, because only they will have the same package as us. There have been discussions of three cars per team in the past, but you never know which will be the best solution. We have people making those decisions. We have full faith in the FIA and FOM, so we are in good hands,” added the two-time world champion.
