Royal Belgian Football Association director – Manu Leroy has said the country’s national team will not push for the suspended Euro 2024 qualifier to be played. Last night’s game was tied 1-1 at the break and was not restarted because of the terrorist act in Brussels, in which two Swedes were killed.
“We want to show respect to Sweden in this difficult situation. I will contact their FA, Austria’s FA as well as UEFA to discuss the matter. From a purely sporting point of view, the 1-1 result is not advantageous for us, but we will not pursue our interest. At certain times, ethics and morality have to take over,” Leroy said.
The Belgians are certain finalists at Euro 2024 regardless of the outcome of the match with Sweden. The Red Devils have as many as 10 points more than the Scandinavians, who cannot fight for one of the first two places even if they win all their matches until the end of the qualifiers.
