Bordeaux forward Alberth Elis is in the process of recovery after a surgical procedure and induction into a coma following a severe head injury sustained during a league match, as confirmed by his family in a statement relayed by the Ligue 2 club.
The 28-year-old Honduras international had a collision with Guingamp defender Donatien Gomis merely 40 seconds into the game at Nouveau Stade de Bordeaux on Saturday, leading to his removal from the field on a stretcher.
Bordeaux reported on Sunday that Elis was swiftly taken to the hospital, underwent surgery overnight, and necessitated placement in a protective induced coma. On Wednesday, his family shared positive updates, stating that Elis is awakening and exhibiting gradual recovery. Despite these optimistic signs, caution is maintained about the evolving condition, with the family emphasizing Elis’s fighting spirit and pledging to provide further updates in the coming days.
