The Canadian Football Association (CFA) has issued an official statement condemning racism after fans directed abuse towards members of the national team following their 2-0 loss to Argentina in the Copa America opener. According to TSN, defender Moïse Bombito was the primary target of this aggression.
Outraged supporters attacked Bombito with racist remarks on social media and even threatened him with lynching, making offensive comments about his family as well.
“We are extremely concerned by the resurgence of such rhetoric in our society. Racism has no place in the 21st century. We will take action and provide full support to our players. We have informed CONCACAF about the incident and hope this does not happen again,” the association stated.
