Novak Djokovic is optimistic about his potential participation in Wimbledon, contingent on his physical readiness by the time of Friday’s draw. The Serbian star underwent surgery after suffering a torn meniscus in his right knee during his fourth-round match at the French Open.
Djokovic said that his decision to play will be based on his ability to compete at a high level, hence for the title. “I will not play just because it is Wimbledon. I will play only if I truly know I am in a condition that is good enough to go far in the tournament and fight for the title,” he said.
“I’m not here to play a few rounds. I will take it day by day and then make a decision based on the feeling that my team and I have over the next four or five days. If I know I can play close to my best or at my best, then I will play. If not, then I will give someone else a chance to play,” Djokovic added.
Djokovic acknowledged the unpredictability of his condition once the tournament begins but expressed satisfaction with his progress post-surgery. “It is unpredictable what will happen once the tournament starts. But so far, I like my trajectory. The feelings I had after the surgery were always geared towards trying to make it to Wimbledon, despite many people thinking it might not be realistic or smart. Many people talk without knowing what we go through daily, and that is normal. But my team internally and I know what we do daily to give me the chance to play, so I am actually very pleased with the way I am moving on the court so far,” he concluded.
