Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali has issued a warning that Monza may be at risk of being removed from the Formula 1 calendar. The Italian Grand Prix at Monza is one of the most prestigious and iconic races, hosting a round of the world championship since 1950.
Monza currently has a contract until 2025, as does the other Italian race on the calendar, the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix. Negotiations are underway to extend the contracts for both tracks, but Domenicali cautioned that Monza needs to “keep up with the times” to secure its place in the calendar for the future.
“We are negotiating at the moment, but we need elements to continue these negotiations,” stated Domenicali.
“I am in good contact with the Italian Motorsport Federation. Work at Monza was supposed to start shortly after the last Grand Prix. Now it’s December, and it still hasn’t begun. We hope this will happen in the near future,” added the CEO of F1.
Domenicali has previously emphasized the need for modernization at Monza to meet the evolving requirements of F1. According to him, logistical issues need to be addressed, the track surface needs renewal, and a new underpass needs to be constructed.
“My criticism is constructive. We need to keep up with the times,” explained Domenicali.
