Formula One drivers are preparing a collective response to the FIA’s crackdown on swearing after Red Bull’s Max Verstappen faced penalties for his language during a press conference. Mercedes driver George Russell, a director of the Grand Prix Drivers’ Association, indicated that the drivers will likely issue a united statement during next week’s Mexican Grand Prix.
Russell acknowledged the situation as “a little bit silly” and expressed that while drivers understand the need to be mindful of their language, they also want to preserve the “heat of the moment” emotions that come with racing. He suggested that it might be up to broadcasters to decide whether to air such moments.

Verstappen has limited his answers during official FIA press conferences since being penalized after the Singapore Grand Prix, but continues to speak openly with reporters outside of FIA events. The reigning world champion was ordered to complete “work of public interest” for using a swear word to describe his car. Verstappen has not received further communication from the FIA regarding the matter but expressed that he will continue to live his life as usual and speak out when necessary.
While Russell emphasized the drivers’ responsibility in calmer environments, he also hinted that they will engage with the FIA soon, aiming for a resolution that balances emotional expression with professional conduct.
