Nowadays the cars are 440 pounds heavier than 15 years ago

There talk about the big changes that are about to be introduced in Formula 1 in 2026 is continuing. Some of new ways to develop the sport are known, but others are still being worked out. The one thing that unites the FIA and Formula 1 is the reduction of the weight of the cars.

Currently, the cars that drivers race are heavier than ever. For this season, the minimum weight of a car is 1 759 pounds (798 kilograms), which is 440 pounds (200 kilograms) more than the weight in 2008, for example. With each different era and rule change, the car gets heavier.

Now, however, the sports bosses want the car to be lighter. FIA President Mohammed bin Sulayem expressed just such a desire to Motorsport.com.

“One thing I want to see is a lighter car. I believe that will be for the good. A lighter car means it will be safer and use less fuel. It will be difficult to achieve , but we all want this”.
