Former Australian rugby star Jarryd Hayne was convicted of rape. This is the third time Hein has appeared in court for the same case. The first trial ended without a jury verdict, the second with a conviction that was overturned on appeal, only for him to be found guilty again.
Since the start of the trial, Hayne has denied allegations that he assaulted a woman in her room in 2018. According to the new sentence, he will be sentenced on Wednesday. The case lasted 11 days for the third time before the court, again the defense and the prosecution presented evidence and heard the witnesses. The court once again heard the story that it all happened on September 30, 2018, when Hayne entered the woman’s home in Newcastle. She refused to have intercourse with him, but despite her repeated refusals, Hayne “took what he wanted”.
After six days of deliberations, the jury found Hayne guilty of two counts of sexual assault. After the second conviction was overturned on appeal, Hein spent nine months in prison before being granted a new trial.
Hayne is one of Australia’s most valuable players in rugby league and had a brief trip to the NFL (with the San Francisco 49ers in 2015). He appeared 11 times for the Australian national team, with which he became world champion in 2013.
