Seven-time Formula 1 world champion Lewis Hamilton has apologized to his teammate George Russell for the incident at the first corner of the Qatar Grand Prix.
“I started with faster tires so I thought I could get past George. But there was too little space, I didn’t even immediately understand what happened. George is not to blame for what happened. I took a risk trying to regain positions at the start and let the team down. After watching the replay, I can say that the mistake was 100% mine. I apologize to George and the team,” Hamilton was quoted by Sky Sports F1.
The Briton crashed at the first corner, colliding with Russell. Hamilton was unable to continue the race due to damage, but Russell was able to return to the track and finish fourth, getting important points in the battle for second in the constructors’ championship against Ferrari, who also had just one car in the race after Carlos Sainz’s fuel system failure.
