On Monday, Washington announced the hiring of Utah State’s Danny Sprinkle as the new head coach of the Huskies, succeeding Mike Hopkins, who was terminated earlier this month with one year left on his contract.
In a news release, Washington’s interim athletic director, Erin O’Connell, praised Sprinkle, highlighting his track record of success both as a player and a coach. “Simply put, Coach Sprinkle is a winner,” O’Connell stated. “He won as a high school player, as a collegiate student-athlete, as an assistant coach, and then at both stops as a head coach, including the recent regular season conference championship at Utah State.”
O’Connell emphasized Sprinkle’s ability to connect with student-athletes, develop their skills, and contribute positively to the community. “Coach is exactly what our program needs at this moment in time,” she added.
Sprinkle, 47, swiftly accepted the position at Washington less than 24 hours after Utah State’s elimination from the NCAA Tournament by top-seeded Purdue. His departure comes after Utah State’s defeat to Purdue, with the Aggies suffering a heavy 106-67 loss on Sunday following an initial victory over TCU in the tournament’s first round.
Hopkins, who led the Huskies for seven seasons, amassed a 118-106 record during his tenure, securing just one NCAA berth. Notably, the Huskies are set to transition to the Big Ten Conference for the 2024-25 season, adding further intrigue to the upcoming chapter under Coach Sprinkle’s leadership.
