Mercedes have confirmed that James Allison has returned to the team has re-taken his old role as a Technical Director with immediate effect.
Mike Elliot, who had been filling Allison’s shoes, has stepped away from the role and is now in the position of Chief Technical Officer.
Allison joined Mercedes from Ferrari back in 2017 and has been an instrumental figure in their championship winning years.
In 2022 major technical regulation change led to Mercedes dropping down the pecking order and eventually finishing third in the Contructors Championship.
The hopes were running high for the 2023 campaign, but a dominant Red Bull and a resurgent Aston Martin has seen the Woking team struggle once again.
As a response to that Mercedes have decided to swap their two high-profile figures positions.
“Mike has led a review of our technical organisation to ensure we have the right structure to deliver sustainable success in the future,” said a Mercedes spokesperson.
“We are focused on building the best racing car – and building the best team to develop that car, with everybody playing to their greatest strengths in the organisation.”
