Lionel Messi turned down an enormous offer from Saudi Arabian club Al-Hilal, opting instead to join Inter Miami in the MLS, according to Al-Hilal president Anmar al Hailey.
The Saudi Pro League champions attempted to secure Messi’s signature in the summer of 2023, following his departure from Paris Saint-Germain, by offering a staggering $1.5 billion deal. However, Messi declined the offer, prioritizing his family’s preference to move to the United States.
Al Hailey shared, “We were in contact with Messi when his contract with the Parisians was expiring. We offered Lionel $1.5 billion, but he refused because his family wanted to move to America.” He further explained, “It’s surprising that a player would reject such an offer for the sake of his family. He tried to convince his family, but he respected their wishes and refused without hesitation. We respect that because family is more important than money.”
Messi joined Inter Miami as a free agent in July 2023. His debut season was impressive, as he scored 25 goals and provided 16 assists in 29 matches across all competitions, leading Inter Miami to victory in the Leagues Cup.
