Dustin Poirier is considered as the best UFC warrior to never been an undisputed champ, and Islam Makhachev made sure that didn’t change by submitting him in the 5th round to keep the lightweight title during UFC 302 at the Prudential Center.

The Russian had to show his best vs. a resilient fighter who did what he could to defeat the champ and number 1 pound-for-pound fighter in front of a public that cheered for Dustin to achieve his dream.
However, Islam is used to be the bad guy in the story and didn’t affect him as he defended the title.
For 4 and a half rounds, Dustin fended off several takedown attempts, escaped submissions, and pulled himself off the canvas when things were not looking great. But Islam in the end caught Poirier during a scramble with a phenomenal ankle pick that gave him the opportunity to snatch a d’arce choke and win by submission at 2:42 in the 5th round.
“Poirier fought extremely well,” Makhachev shared after the triumph.
