Rory McIlroy revealed on Wednesday that he will not be rejoining the PGA Tour’s policy board, citing discomfort among some board members with his potential return.
Last year, McIlroy had stepped down from the board but expressed his readiness to resume his position, intending to take Webb Simpson’s place after Simpson offered to resign from his role as one of the player directors. However, McIlroy disclosed that discussions regarding his return became “complicated and messy,” leading to Simpson remaining on the board for the remainder of his term.
McIlroy shared with reporters, “The way it unfolded brought up some past issues, and it seemed that certain board members were uneasy with my reinstatement for some reason.” He emphasized that the best course of action was for Simpson to continue his term if there were any discomforts with his return.
Despite the setback, McIlroy remains committed to contributing to the sport’s growth and expressed no hard feelings about the situation. He had hoped to assist in resolving negotiations between the PGA Tour and Saudi-backed LIV Golf tour, following their announcement of a merger to unify golf. However, negotiations are ongoing, and McIlroy’s involvement in the process remains uncertain.
