A majority of the world’s football leagues want dialogue between referees and VAR rooms to be broadcasted live and thus made public, a survey published in the BBC found.
The Premier League is one of 41 leagues included in the research by the World Leagues Forum. Currently, the International Board of Football Associations does not allow the two-way audio transmission between referees to be heard by television viewers.
A survey of fans in England found that 63.3% were against VAR and 79.1% rated their experience of VAR as bad or very bad.
This contrasts with a 2017 survey by the Football Supporters’ Association – before the introduction of VAR – which found 74.6% of fans favored the use of video referees to support officials on the pitch.
The World Leagues Forum was established in 2016 and represents 41 professional football league organizations, including Europe’s biggest leagues.
