Former F1 driver Juan-Pablo Montoya shared what he thinks the reason is behind Adrian Newey’s decision to join Ferrari. Montoya raced Newey cars in 2005 and 2006 when he was a McLaren driver and has experience dealing with him.
“I think the only reason Newey will go to Ferrari is the opportunity to work on their production models – explained the Colombian. – If Ferrari told him: “You will be responsible for our next five supercar models and you will also have to make a car for Formula 1, I think he would immediately agree, because Adrian always wants to achieve more than what is possible.
Newey is currently working on the RB17, Red Bull’s hypercar, which should be ready before he officially leaves the company at the end of the year.
Montoya also predicted that Red Bull would not fail after parting ways with Newey, although F1 history shows the opposite – teams that Newey leaves very often suffer for quite a long period of time.
“There is a lot of work to be done before the new technical rules come into action, but Red Bull has hired the right people and I think they will do well,” Montoya said.
