DeMaurice Smith suggests a different resolution.

While the National Football League’s Rooney Rule was most likely created with goodwill, many people don’t like it and its effectiveness in providing opportunities for minority people to work in the front office or as managers.

DeMaurice Smith, head of NFLPA for 14 years run, will end at the end of July; he thinks that the NFL must end the Rooney Rule and create new guidelines to provide more diverse hiring decisions in the league. Smith shared many of these guidelines that he created with Yale law student Carl Lasker.

“The league’s system is cracked,” the team shared. “To fix it, NFL must admit that the Rooney Rule is a failure and replace their unchecked discretion with valid requirements to end discrimination, provide fairness, enhance diversity, and build a system where everyone can succeed no matter of his color or from what family he is coming from.”
