Le’Von Bell has described the reason for his decision to leave the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2017 as ‘petty’.
He was considered as one of the best running back at that period (from 2013 to 2017) and felt that made him deserving of a long-term contract.
However, it were not to happen as Pittsburgh never offered him one and he left subsequently for the Jets.
“Yeah, it was a little petty, the little guarantee stuff,” he said on the Steel Here podcast. “I’m thinking like, ‘Damn, could I have really just ate it?’ Yeah, I probably could’ve. Probably could’ve really ate it.”
According to Bell, Pittsburgh offered him $13.3 million a year in 2017, whicha deal he declined. In 2018, the Steelers offered him the same deal, but he felt disrespected because he had been playing through injury. He refused to accept the offer and sat out the majority of the season and.
Afterwards he signed with New York in free agency for $52.5 million over four years in ’19. The deal included $35 million guaranteed.
