Sweden defeated USA 5:4 after penalty kicks after 0-0 draw in regular and extra time.
The Swedes eliminated the current champions and qualified for the 1/4-finals of the Women’s World Cup. Sweden’s next opponent will be Japan, after their 3-1 win over Norway.
Both teams created scoring chances, but the Americans had more opportunities to score and should regret not finding success in regular time and overtime. Björn and Blomqvist missed consecutively in the penalty shootout for Sweden, but for the USA the last two penalties were wasted by Rapinoe and Smith.
