MKE Ankaragucu president Faruk Koca has announced he is stepping down from his position after a controversial incident during a Monday’s match, where he punched match official Halil Umut Meler in the face.
Koca was seen hitting Meler in the left eye, causing minor injuries to the socket, as the referee was kicked several times by other players after being brought down to the ground.
Police had to intervene to calm the situation down. The incident has gone on the national scale as the president of Turkey himself condemned the act. FIFA and UEFA have also released a statement, where they label the incident ‘disgraceful’ and ‘unacceptable’.
As a result Koca has publicly announced his resignation through a statement on the club’s website.
“I would like to announce to the public that I have resigned from the MKE Ankaragucu Presidency in order to prevent any further harm to the Ankaragucu club, Ankaragucu fans, the community I am in and my family,” Koca said.
