The 52-year-old was moved in his homeland last week after brief stay in Croatian hospital and now his condition has stabilized.
“I’m happy to share that I’m no longer in the intensive care unit,” Van der Sar said in a statement on his Twitter.
“However, I’m still in hospital. I hope to go home next week and take the next step in my recovery.”
Van der Sar was an Ajax member of the board, but in May he resigned after the team finished third, failing to qualify for the Champions League for the first time since 2009.
The Dutchman retired from professional football back in 2011 and joined the Ajax board in 2012, becoming the club’s chief executive in 2016.
Van der Sar is considered one of Manchester United’s finest goalkeepers, making 266 appearances for the club and winning 4 Premier League titles and the memorable 2008 Champions League triumph over Chelsea, where he played a vital role in the penalty shootout.
