A fan invasion in the opening game of the Olympic football tournament between Argentina and Morocco today caused chaos, with Argentina eventually defeated 2-1 after a VAR review after play was suspended with the result evened 2-2.
Argentina’s Cristian Medina netted in the last possible moment in the 105th minute to secure what looked like a 2-2 draw, but the decision ruling out the goal was announced about 2 hours after the match was suspended when the nations re-emerged on to the pitch to end the game in an empty venue.
There were pictures of some Argentina footballers flinching when what appeared to be a flare was thrown. Bottles and cups were strewn over the pitch in the last minutes.

The Olympics official portal also showed the game as “interrupted.”
About 60 minutes after the episode, organizers at the stadium announced the game was not officially over. Footballers were being kept at the venue to continue the match. Video boards informed supporters the game was suspended and they must leave the venue.
The boxscore on the Olympics’ media website revealed here would be a VAR review of Medina’s equalizer for an offside and that’s what happened as his goal was disallowed 2 hours later and the game resumed with Morocco leading 2-1 as that’s how it ended with 3 minutes being played after the continue of the game.
