It is clear now that WR Brandon Aiyuk will not remain part of the San Francisco 49ers. The only question that remains is when this will become official.
On today’s end-of-campaign news conference, San Francisco GM John Lynch shared what has been known for a long time: Brandon will not return to the only organization in the league he has ever known.
“Without a doubt, Aiyuk has played his last snap for the 49ers,” the general manager revealed. “It is unfortunate, and I’m sorry for that, but things sometimes don’t work out. And that’s the case here.”
John told the media that the wide receiver will be released or traded, but the chances for a trade are very slim. San Francisco had hoped to trade the WRs in the past offseason, but his injury ended any realistic hopes for getting something significant for him, as he had a big deal.
The Niners GM added that moving on from Aiyuk will give the team more cap flexibility in the future, as his future guarantees on his contract will be voided.
Kyle Shanahan calls the Brandon Aiyuk situation “confusing” and something he’s never seen in his 22 years coaching in the NFL.
“Communication stopped for me when I tried getting a hold of him and couldn’t. Tried a couple more times and still couldn’t. #FTTB pic.twitter.com/DDYuFirgmT
