The San Francisco 49ers exchanged 3 1st round selections and a 3rd rounder to Miami in 2021 to get a better draft pick and select Trey Lance with the 3rd overall selection. While trading the QB 2 seasons later, the organization expected not to get much for him now.
None of San Francisco’s early proposals for Trey included a 4th round selection.
“It wasn’t anywhere close,” GM John Lynch shared.
Then, Dallas called, and owner Jerry Jones claimed they wanted the quarterback so badly that they didn’t hang up the phone. The 4th rounder Cowboys proposed to the 49ers was a “little better than we expected,” manager Kyle Shanahan said after the trade.
The head coach added that a few teams wanted the QB. The boss didn’t share if San Francisco would have kept the QB if they didn’t get a great offer for him.

“We view it as an opportunity. We view it as an additional part of this team that could pay dividends this year, but certainly when we look to the future, will pay dividends in my mind.”@CBSNewsTexas |… pic.twitter.com/ewcVimMdHF
