The win helped Spain tie with Belgium 1-1 after Rebeka Masarova lost to Elise Mertens earlier in the day.
It was Alcaraz first victory after famously dethroning Novak Djokovic in the Wimbledon final.
The world No.1 didn’t find his best touch and looked a shadow of himself compared to last week in the All England’s Club. But it was sufficient to edge out and overpower his opponent.
Spain next face Croatia – who beat Belgium 2-1 – on Saturday, with the winners of their three-team group facing Switzerland in the final on Sunday.
The Hopman Cup made its comeback on the calendar after 4 year absence, the last edition being in 2019. It is unique event as it pairs players from the same nationality as they face one against each other.
