The decision comes after couple of accidents with fans, reported by players

With an already gloomy start to the day due to the weather, tournament director Amelie Mauresmo took the decisive step of banning wine and beer consumption in the stands to manage unruly behavior among spectators, following an incident where Belgian player David Goffin reported a fan spitting gum at him two days prior.

This move comes after defending champion Iga Swiatek called for fans to refrain from screaming during rallies, especially during tense matches, after her victory over Naomi Osaka on Wednesday.

Mauresmo acknowledged the enthusiasm and passion of the fans but emphasized the need for limits. “First of all, we’re happy people are very enthusiastic about watching tennis and being part of the matches, showing feeling and emotions,” Mauresmo said. “But there are definitely steps which shouldn’t go further. A few things have needed to be put in place. Alcohol was allowed up until now in the stands but that’s over.”

To ensure compliance, security will be increased, and umpires will enforce stricter regulations. Additional measures may be implemented if necessary.

Former world number two Paula Badosa, currently facing a drop in rankings due to injuries, commented that top players like Swiatek should not complain excessively. “I played Court eight and nine and you can hear everything. I can hear Suzanne Lenglen, Philippe Chatrier, courts six, seven during points. She’s lucky she can play all the time on Philippe Chatrier and she’s okay with that,” Badosa remarked.

Despite the challenges, Badosa expressed her appreciation for the fans’ return, highlighting the importance of their presence. “Honestly, I like when the fans cheer. I get pumped. Look, we had a very tough situation years ago when we were playing without fans with the COVID situation. I’m so happy they’re back. I think they’re very important for our sport.”
