In response to technical setbacks and unsatisfactory track performances during the tumultuous beginning of the 2023 Formula 1 season, the Alpine F1 Team has initiated a significant internal restructuring. The exits of technical director Matt Harman and head of aerodynamics Dirk de Beer have prompted a strategic overhaul designed to realign the team’s competitive trajectory.
In a decisive move to address current challenges, the Alpine F1 Team has introduced a new three-pillared leadership structure, drawing inspiration from successful industry models. Joe Burnell, David Wheater, and Ciaron Pilbeam have assumed the roles of technical directors for engineering, aerodynamics, and performance, respectively. This trio of experts aims to promote increased collaboration and innovation within the team, with each director focusing on their specialized domain. Eric Meignan is at the helm of the Viry engine team, prioritizing the 2026 project, while newly appointed Enstone CEO John Woods and Viry counterpart Audrey Vastroux bring fresh perspectives to their leadership roles.

The restructuring comes on the heels of a disappointing performance at the Bahrain Grand Prix, where drivers Esteban Ocon and Pierre Gasly faced significant struggles, finishing at the bottom of the race standings. This outcome underscored the immediate need for operational and strategic changes within the team. Alpine’s decision to reorganize is not only aimed at addressing current technical and performance issues but also at laying a foundation for sustained success in the fiercely competitive Formula 1 landscape. Team principal Bruno Famin has expressed confidence in the new leadership’s ability to guide the team toward improved results.
