Marsch, who was sacked by Leeds United last Monday, and the Saints held an initial round of talks on Monday, where the length of his potential contract were discussed.
Southampton have considered it crucial to act fast and decisively in their search, and want a new manager installed before their next match against Chelsea on February 18.
The 39-year-old Marsch has worked across the Red Bull group at New York Red Bulls, Red Bull Salzburg and RB Leipzig, where the former Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhuttl, whom Jones replaced, spent two years in charge.
Southampton are bottom of the table with 15 points from 22 matches.
