The London side was seconds away from the defeat, but managed to lift the trophy

Arsenal started the new season with a trophy, beating Manchester City on penalties for the FA Community Shield. This annual match opposes the Premier League champion and the FA Cup winner, but because last year City won both trophies, the Premier League runner-up Arsenal took the spot in the final.

The Citizens were leading 1-0 up until the 11 minute of injury time, but a lucky goal sent the clash into penalties where City made two mistakes, which were costly.

Arsenal had the first opportunity to open the scoring in the 25 minute when Havertz shot well, but Ortega managed to make a save. Martinelli was first to the rebound and took a shot from the edge of the box, but it was blocked.

The second half was going under City’s control as Arsenal were defending deep. Their defensive play, though, broke in the 77 minute when Cole Palmer received the ball into the penalty area, changed direction and with a beautiful shot towards the far post left Ramsdale no chance.

Manchester City were already seeing themselves as winners in the 11th minutes of injury time, but after a corner kick Trossard shot towards the goal, the ball deflected off Akanji and went straight into the net as Ortega was fooled and already on the ground towards the opposite side of the goal.

This way the clash went into penalty kicks. Odegaard opened them with a precise shot, but Kevin De Bruyne rattled the crossbar after him. Trossard was cool in the second Arsenal penalty, giving a 2-0 lead before Bernardo Silva scoring for 2-1. Saka scored, but Rodri recorded the second miss for City after Ramsdale’s save. Fabio Vieira took the responsibility to finish things off and did for the 4-1 win on penalties.
