Bayern Munich has announced the conclusion of their work with coach Thomas Tuchel at the end of the current season, despite having a contract until 2025, the club revealed on Wednesday. The decision follows Bayern’s recent struggles, including three consecutive losses in all competitions, including a 3-0 defeat to Bundesliga leaders Bayer Leverkusen, resulting in an eight-point gap. Furthermore, a 1-0 loss to Lazio in the Champions League first leg has put their silverware ambitions at risk for the first time in over a decade.

Tuchel, who took charge in March 2023, faced high expectations but encountered a challenging start, exiting the German Cup and Champions League before securing the Bundesliga title from Borussia Dortmund on the final matchday. The current season has seen Bayern’s inconsistent form, with an early exit from the German Cup against third-tier club Saarbruecken.
Bayern CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen emphasized a “new direction” for the next season with a new coach. Dreesen stated, “In a good, open discussion, we came to the decision to end our working relationship by mutual agreement in the summer.” He added that the goal is to pursue a new footballing direction for the 2024/25 season. Dreesen called on every individual at the club to strive for the maximum in the Champions League and Bundesliga until the end of the current season.

Tuchel, who previously managed Borussia Dortmund, Paris St Germain, and won a Champions League title with Chelsea in 2021, expressed his focus on the remaining goals in the Bundesliga and the Champions League during his remaining time in Munich. The season has been challenging due to injuries to key players and a relatively thin squad, despite the arrival of Bundesliga record signing Harry Kane.
