Matteo Berrettini has withdrawn from the upcoming Italian Open as it was confirmed he is still recovering from a stomach muscle tear.
Berrettini picked up the injury at Monte Carlo Masters and withdrew from the tournament immediately, before his Round of 16 match against Holger Rune.
With its recovery extending, doubts have been raised whether he will be fit for the big event – the French Open, which starts on May 28.
Even if he is to get back to fitness, missing Rome is a huge blow for the Italian as it is the last clay-tournament before the Roland Garros, meaning he will miss valuable time for preparation. On top of that the Italian Open is a home event for Berrettini, who is from Rome.
“Withdrawing from and missing the Rome event is so so difficult, and that is all because of the (Italian) fans. Your support means everything and I can’t wait to be back competing in front of you again soon,” he wrote.
