Finke completed the grueling 30-lap race in 14 minutes, 30.67 seconds at La Defense Arena, surpassing the previous record of 14:31.02 set by Sun Yang at the London Games 12 years ago.
Italy’s Gregorio Paltrinieri claimed silver, finishing 3.88 seconds behind Finke, while Daniel Wiffen of Ireland, the 800m gold medalist, secured bronze. Finke’s victory made him the first male swimmer to win back-to-back Olympic golds in the 1,500 meters freestyle since Australia’s Grant Hackett in 2000-04 and the first American since Mike Burton in 1968-72.
This achievement marked the U.S. team’s seventh gold medal of the meet, allowing them to surpass Australia and take the lead in the medal standings on the final night of competition.
