National Treasure gave Baffert an 8th Preakness victory and finished Mage’s Triple Crown effort in his return from a suspension – and after earlier today, one of his 3-year-old horses was euthanized.
National Treasure wins the 148th running of the Preakness Stakes.
It’s the first Preakness win for Hall of Fame jockey John Velazquez, and a record eighth Preakness win for trainer Bob Baffert.

Baffert triumphed hours after his colt Havnameltdown suffered a fatal leg injury on the track in an undercard contest. Bob shared that he and the people around him were in shock.
“Getting the 1st place,” Baffert shared, choking back tears after National Treasure’s victory, “losing that horse hours ago really hurts. It’s been a very sensitive day.”
Mage, that conquered Derby, finished in 3rd place after being the favorite for the victory at Preakness. That determines there will not be a Triple Crown champ for 5th year in a row.
