Bob’s National Treasure triumphs at Preakness

National Treasure gave Baffert an 8th Preakness victory and finished Mage’s Triple Crown effort in his return from a suspension – and after earlier today, one of his 3-year-old horses was euthanized.

National Treasure wins the 148th running of the Preakness Stakes.

It’s the first Preakness win for Hall of Fame jockey John Velazquez, and a record eighth Preakness win for trainer Bob Baffert.

Baffert triumphed hours after his colt Havnameltdown suffered a fatal leg injury on the track in an undercard contest. Bob shared that he and the people around him were in shock.

“Getting the 1^st place,” Baffert shared, choking back tears after National Treasure’s victory, “losing that horse hours ago really hurts. It’s been a very sensitive day.”

Mage, that conquered Derby, finished in 3rd place after being the favorite for the victory at Preakness. That determines there will not be a Triple Crown champ for 5^th year in a row.
