The home team were the more persistent side and kept on the pressure towards the closing stages.
Their efforts were rewarded as they were given a late stoppage time penalty with an assistance from VAR for a handball from Luke Shaw.
Referee Andre Marriner had a close inspection on the screen and decided to award the home team with a penalty kick.
Up stepped Alexis Mac Allister and the World Cup winner sent the crowd into jubilation as he hammered his shot past David De Gea and into the back of the net to avange their 1/2 final loss at Wembley just 11 days ago.
With this victory Brighton move up to sixth with 55 points, eight behind 4th placed United. In between them sit Liverpool with 59, but the Merseyside team have played one more game. However Brighton have a game in hand and if United were to slip up one more time then there will be a real fight for the final Champions League spot.
