The greatest regular season showing succumbs to a 1st round playoff crashout

The Florida Panthers came out victorious 4-3 against Boston Bruins in a hard-fought match, which saw the record-breaking team get eliminated on Sunday night.

Carter Verhaege’s goal at 8:35 in overtime proved decisive after Brandon Montour had tied the game with 1 minute to spare in regular time.

Florida have staged an amazing comeback with a third straight victory after being down 3-1 overall. All the more special is that Boston, who registered 65 wins and 135 points over the season, hadn’t lost thrice in a row.

Goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky made 33 saves to ensure his team qualifies for the 2nd round of the playoffs, something that Florida hasn’t done since reaching the Stanley Cup Final back in 1996.

“I don’t think you can find a harder team to play against than the Boston Bruins. They will test you,” said Florida coach Paul Maurice.

“The players here now have a shared experience of what hard is. … It will make us better for five years. That’s how hard it was.”

Toronto Maple Leafs lie in the wake of the Panthers for a thrilling second-round faceoff.
