Veteran linebacker C.J. Mosley has officially hung up his cleats, announcing his retirement from the NFL on Thursday — a decision he shared on his 33rd birthday.
A five-time Pro Bowl selection and defensive leader throughout his 11-year career, Mosley made the announcement in a heartfelt 2-minute video on Instagram, titled “Once upon a time…”, which featured highlights from his time with the Baltimore Ravens and New York Jets.

“Today, it is time to wake up from my childhood dream and share it with the next generation,” Mosley said. “I spent my whole life and career building my legacy. Now it’s time to start a new chapter with new dreams. It won’t be easy, but I’m here to tell you every sacrifice is worth it. When you wake up, what will your legacy look like?”
Mosley was released by the Jets in March after injuries — including a toe issue and a herniated disk in his neck — limited him to just four games in the 2023 season. Despite the setback, he remained one of the most respected and productive linebackers of his era.
Drafted 17th overall by Baltimore in the 2014 NFL Draft out of Alabama, Mosley quickly became a cornerstone of the Ravens’ defense. Over the course of his career, he amassed nearly 1,100 tackles, 12 sacks, 12 interceptions, 10 forced fumbles, nine fumble recoveries, and three defensive touchdowns.
After five standout seasons in Baltimore, Mosley signed a five-year, $85 million deal with the Jets in 2019, becoming the anchor of New York’s defense and one of the league’s most consistent tacklers when healthy.
