Ferrari driver Carlos Sainz is set to make a comeback at the upcoming Australian Grand Prix after recovering from appendicitis surgery, confirmed the Italian Formula One team.
Sainz withdrew from the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix following his appendicitis diagnosis, where he was replaced by reserve driver Oliver Bearman. However, Ferrari stated that Sainz is expected to return to the race seat at Albert Park this week.
“Carlos has been in Melbourne for two days now and is doing well. We anticipate him to participate,” a team spokesperson announced.
Sainz, who clinched third place in the Bahrain season-opener and secured a victory in Singapore last September, will be departing Ferrari at the end of the season to make room for Mercedes’ seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton.
During Sainz’s absence, British teenager Bearman made an impressive F1 debut in Jeddah, finishing seventh and becoming Ferrari’s youngest ever rookie after starting 11th on the grid.
