This will be the second straight season Strus is hit with serious injury setback

The Cleveland Cavaliers will be without Max Strus at the start the 2025–26 season after the team announced Tuesday that the guard underwent surgery on his left foot. Strus is expected to miss three to four months while recovering from a Jones fracture sustained during a recent workout.

The 29-year-old underwent the procedure at Forte Sports Medicine and Orthopedics in Indianapolis. A Jones fracture is a break in the bone that connects the pinkie toe to the base of the foot, often requiring extended recovery time.

This marks the second straight year Strus has suffered a significant setback before the season. Last year, he missed the first two months with a sprained right ankle sustained in preseason workouts. He returned in late December and went on to appear in 50 games, averaging 9.4 points, 4.3 rebounds and 3.2 assists while shooting 38.6 percent from three-point range. In the playoffs, he elevated his production to 11.7 points per game, including a pair of 20-plus-point outings in the Eastern Conference semifinals against Indiana.

Strus, who previously played one season in Chicago and three in Miami, joined Cleveland last summer on a four-year, $63 million sign-and-trade deal. He made an immediate impact in his debut campaign with the Cavaliers, averaging a career-best 12.2 points per game.
