The Blues were quick to respond, but unfortunately from them two interventions from the video assistant referee cut short their celebrations.
But their efforts were soon rewarded not only with a penalty kick, but a straight red for Christian Romero, whose tackle was deemed too dangerous and he was given his marching orders.
Up stepped Cole Palmer and his finish was calm and collected to draw his team level.
Ange Postecoglou’s side suffered another blow early in the second half as Destiny Udogie was shown a red card for second bookable offense and Spurs were reduced to 9 men.
For a long time they managed to hold on courageously, but in the end a brilliant finish from Nicolas Jackson put the Blues in front and from then on Spurs collapsed.
Two more goals from Jackson secured his first hat-trick for Chelsea and rounded off the final scoreline 4-1.
It was a bitter night for Tottenham as they were aiming to return to the top of the Premier League. They now trail Manchester City by one point, whereas Chelsea move up to 10th.
