The Dallas Cowboys did what everyone thought they would do today, placing the franchise tag on WR George Pickens to secure his rights at least this year, the organization revealed today.
The tag will guarantee George at least 28 million dollars in the current year, but working out a long-term contract is still on the cards. The Cowboys and Pickens have until the middle of summer to ink a long-term deal, or by the league rule, the wide receiver will play on the 1-year contract or choose to hold out.
Dallas used the nonexclusive designation on George, which means that the star WR can talk to other franchises with free agency starting next month. Should George ink an offer sheet with another organization, Dallas will have the right to match the offer or decline to do so and get 1st-round selections in return.
Dallas met with George’s representatives yesterday at the National Football League scouting combine.
