The NHL tradition to hold games outside USA and Canada continued in Melbourne

The Arizona Coyotes beat the Los Angeles Kings 5-3 in the first ever NHL game played in Australia.

The match, which is part of the pre-season training of both teams, took place in Melbourne and is a continuation of the tradition, which began in the 1980, of holding matches outside the territory of the USA and Canada. The host of the meeting was the “Rod Laver” tennis arena, which was transformed to hold the event.

Seven of the game’s eight goals came in the second period, including all three for Los Angeles. Arizona took the lead through Clayton Keller, and Matthias Machelli, Lawson Krauss, Logan Cooley and Barrett Heaton scored the rest of the goals for the Coyotes with an empty-net goal with 22 seconds remaining.

Adrian Kempe, Viktor Arvidsson and Trevor Moore scored for Los Angeles. On Sunday, the two teams will play another training game in Melbourne.

Before visiting Australia, the NHL played matches in Sweden, Finland, Czechoslovakia, Czech Republic, Slovakia, USSR, Russia, Germany, Australia, Great Britain, Puerto Rico, Latvia, China and Switzerland.
