Late on Saturday night, it was reported by ESPN that the Chicago Cubs and free agent Cody Bellinger have reached a three-year, $80 million agreement. The contract includes opt-outs after the initial two years, with Bellinger set to earn $30 million in each of the first two years and $20 million in the final year if he completes the entire deal.
Bellinger, 28, had a successful bounce-back season with the Cubs in 2023, playing under a one-year, $17.5 million deal. During this season, he achieved a .307 batting average with 26 home runs, 20 stolen bases, and 97 RBIs while showcasing his versatility by playing in both first base and center field. His impressive performance helped him secure a more lucrative multi-year deal.
The talented outfielder’s stint with the Dodgers was marred by a lingering shoulder injury from the 2020 postseason, which impacted his performance over the next two seasons and eventually led to his departure from Los Angeles.
