Spaniard Brahim Diaz scored the only goal – a diving header after Fraser Forster parried Theo Hernandez’s shot.
The victory at home and another clean sheet made it a memorable evening for nearly 80,000 fans at San Siro, who have witnessed a home Champions League’s knockout-stage win for the first time since the 2013-2014 season.
The north London team looked relatively comfortable for long periods of the contest against the Italian giants – as a youthful pairing of Pape Sarr and Oliver Skipp deputized ably for the suspended Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and the injured Rodrigo Bentancur in midfield.
However, they Antonio Conte’s side were rarely able to build any attacking momentum with their front three of Harry Kane, Son Heung-min and, until his withdrawal, Dejan Kulusevski well shackled by a disciplined home defense.
The return leg will take place in London on Wednesday, 8 March.
