Alejandro Tabilo delivered a stunning upset at the Rome Masters on Sunday, defeating six-time champion Novak Djokovic in a commanding 6-2, 6-3 victory in the third round.
The 29th-seeded Chilean was playing amazing in his first-ever encounter with Djokovic. Tabilo broke the Serbian’s serve four times and maintained his composure, not facing a single break point throughout the match. His 68-minute victory marked his first win against a top-ranked player in the ATP Rankings.
Tabilo’s impressive performance earned him a spot in the fourth round of a Masters 1000 event for the second time, following his previous achievement at Indian Wells in 2023. He is set to face 16th seed Karen Khachanov in the next round, who secured his place with a win over Francisco Cerundolo.
Djokovic struggled from the start, facing immediate pressure on his serve as Tabilo seized control of the match with his aggressive play. Despite attempts at a comeback, Djokovic’s efforts were thwarted by his own errors, including crucial double faults that contributed to Tabilo’s success.
